and so the adventure begins...

Pictures: Tulum Beach, Our Cabana, The Shit Shack

so here we are, already entering our third week of travel in southern mexico! its been great so far with the only exception of my having pulled a rib muscle just before coming so i am dealing with some pain sometimes, but all in all--heck yeah we are here and we are finally living the dream.... that which we had been dreaming of all those months amongst asian high rises and exhausting (in both senses) death defying traffic!

we flew into cancun because that was the cheapest flight in-- we didn´t like it...unfortunately we got stuck there for a few days because i decided to go to the dr. the most memorable part would be that our hostel room in downtown seemed like such a good deal until 12 each night when the discotheque next door would open and by open i mean like a firework display of terrible house music shot straight into your ears to the pitch of madness that no earplugs or any amount of pillows over your head could stifle... on the plus side it always ended promptly on time, on the other side that time was 6 a.m.

then it was south 3 hours to Tulum. small town by the caribbean with all of the white sand beaches and turquoise water of cancun but with out resorts and only a small fraction of the rich complaining tourists whose asses are swimsuit hungry fiends and who think the yucatan peninsula is really an american waterpark south of the border.

the set up is all cabañas which are like little huts..our first couple nights we stayed in a structure that we lovingly refered to as the shit shack because of the sand floor, grass roof, and the walls being of sticks not closely enough placed together to keep out important things like rain. on the bright side it was literally a hop skip and a couple jumps into the ocean. on the night of the storm, this was what moved us to a cement walled cabaña.
that one, though similarly overpriced (as everything in Tulum unfortunately was) was lovely and one of my favorite images will be of the full ish moon of the sea at night illuminating the white of the crashing waves for miles out to sea.

we also were able to visit the cenotes in the area which are undergound caves filled with fresh water and complete with stalagtites and stalagmites that you can swim and snorkel in... the first one we went to only had one local guy there who decided to play a trick on me. after i jumped the 15 feet into the swimhole he borrowed a chunk of banana broke it into pieces and threw it in the water next to me.. suddenly i was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of little brown fish all rubbing up against me and nibbling and generally creeping me out in a big way. ha ha, buddy, good one.

tulum was beautiful, especially because of the ancient mayan ruins which are literally right by the sea, but we were constantly getting overcharged so it kind of tainted the whole experience......
